Programme of Excellence
An Introduction to Mindfulness
Thursday 23rd January 2020
Suggested audience: Parents/Carers of students in Year 7 participating in the Mindfulness Project. Year 10 and Year 11 students and their parents/carers.
Are you interested in learning more about Mindfulness? Is your Year 7 son/daughter taking part in the period 1 Mindfulness Project? Are exams looming and you would like to explore a way to manage to become more focussed? Then this session is for you.
Mindfulness Based Interventions (MBI) have been shown to significantly increase positive mood, optimism, attention and social emotional relationships.
Zenner et al, 2014 found that Mindfulness based interventions held promise in relation to improving cognitive performance and resilience to stress, which may help with academic performance.
Mindfulness may, therefore, support children in their education as they may be able to keep their mind more focussed, be more able to regulate their emotions, develop feelings of empathy and compassion and to deal with feelings of frustration.
This session will be run by Sarah Lovell-Brown and Léonie Crissell. Both Sarah and Léonie are involved in delivering the Mindfulness Project in school. They have both attended the Anna Freud Centre in London and received delivery training as part of the DfE research project. Sarah is also an experienced personal practitioner who has delivered an Introduction to Mindfulness to Northgate Sixth Form students for several years as part of their wider wellbeing programme.
