Maths Enrichment Day
On Wednesday 26th June, 60 students from Years 9 and 10 took part in a Maths Enrichment Day.
Joe Bailey, a Senior Lecturer from Essex University, visited the school and helped students to solve the Josephus problem. The Josephus problem is mathematical problem and assumes you have a circle of soldiers and only one of them has a sword. The first soldier kills the next soldier in the circle and passes the sword to the next surviving soldier. This then continues until there is only one soldier still standing, which soldier will it be? Joe worked with the students showing them how to solve the problem using advanced mathematics, including modulo arithmetic and binary conversions.
Students and staff had a great a day and learned some very complex mathematics.
